Are we born to be broken, sinners, and thieves?
Someone tell the heavens I'm ready to escape.
This is not what I wanted, not what I need.
Take it all, tear it all, rip it all away.

In the months since zombies overtook the streets, Ryland grew quite used to being alone. At first there was light communication with the outside world. Friends and distant relatives posted to their Facebook accounts or sent messages checking up on everyone. It didn't take long for updates to die down as, well, everyone died. It was as painful to part with the accustomed fancy gadgets as it was to forget his losses. Luckily, a series of engineering projects provided plenty of distractions. Said projects had to be pushed aside to make room for guests. Unwelcomed guests.

Ryland met the two females earlier the previous day after leaving the comfort of his spacious, two-bedroom hotel suite to scavenge for parts and food. Leaving the suite wasn't an often occurrence for the simple fact that a) he despised the heat and b) exiting the building meant taking 38 flights of stairs. Some tinkering provided enough energy to run appliances and lights in the one suite, but the elevator was not included in that luxury. Being alone meant not having to scavenge more frequently than once a week. With three people and a potential fourth, frequent trips down those horrid stairs were an inevitability. Joy.

It was early in the morning at present time. Knowing he didn't have enough resources to provide for two extra people, the group had spent almost the entire afternoon taking what they could find and lugging it back to the hotel. Too exhausted to mess with it, they piled everything in the center of the living area before trying to catch some Zzzs. Ryland was able to sleep with ease, as he knew they were safe. He wouldn't have stayed in one place for so long if it wasn't safe, though the others may have needed some convincing. Whether or not the ladies actually managed to fall asleep, they were up for the day now. Against his better judgment, Ryland agreed to team up with the two on a search mission to find a stranded family member. Having cared so much for his brother, he understood the need for an answer to the question "where is he and is he alright?"

"We should leave before noon, I think. The sooner the better." He spoke out in the awkward silence and towards the girls. One of them was off in a corner by herself and the other curiously picking through the pile of things they brought back. They needed to get to know each other just a little bit better before they headed out. It was much easier to keep safe from hoards when you were on your own. Less sound from movement and control over every outcome were preferable. In a group ... Ryland needed to know everyone could keep themselves safe if they had to split up. And if not, how much effort would be necessary to keep them so. Just the thought of working in a team amped up the stress. Ryland plucked a pack of cigarettes from the pile and lit one to ease his mind. If only he still knew how to talk to people.

As Ryland did not know how to talk to other humans, he dispersed the smoke collecting around him with the wave of a hand and began putting together what they would need for the day's adventure. The only option was to keep moving.
